Saturday night’s fight between Shawn “Showtime” Porter and Paul “The Magic Man” Malignaggi can be labelled a lot of things…..the defending of a title, the seeking of a third title, a mismatch of styles, a well-known fighter versus a relatively unknown fighter.

Let’s throw another label on this bout…..a label that reads “Good Guy vs Good Guy”.  Let’s face it, at one time or another we have all labeled boxers “good guys” or “bad guys”, and we all have enjoyed our fair share of the good guy against the bad guy in the ring (Broner vs Maidana, Pacquaio vs Bradley anyone?). What happens when two “Good Guys” are in the ring together? They simply box. There is no drama, nothing is over-hyped, over-promoted and nobody is talking about what one said about the other on Twitter.

Malignaggi, the much loved two division world champion, is seeking to win his third world title this weekend.  Standing in his way is Shawn Porter, a boxer who was flying under the radar until he dethroned Devon Alexander in a unanimous decision last December to claim the IBF welterweight title.  Malignaggi, who losthis title to Adrien Broner last June has been very vocal in stating that he feels he won the fight and believes the title should be his.  Porter, who is undefeated and possesses an impressive amateur record, certainly isn’t going to hand it over on a silver platter.

The “Tale of the Tape” shows Malignaggi with a one inch height advantage at 5 feet 8 inches, and just a half an inch reach advantage at 70 inches. Where this gets interesting is their record: Porter, with a record of 23-0-1 already has 14 KO’s to his name, while Paulie, with a record 33-5-0 has 7 in comparison. Their fight styles are of stark contrast with Porter being the more aggressive, come forward, power puncher while Malignaggi is known to be a great defensive boxer who likes to control the ring. Therefore, Porter must cut off the ring and close in on Paulie and when he does, he needs to unload a flurry of explosive punches.  Paulie needs to stay active, use his jab, and be constantly moving to keep Porter off of him.

My prediction:

If Shawn Porter executes a similar game plan to the one he used against Devon Alexander, this will be a long night for Paul Malignaggi.  While Paulie is the seasoned veteran, and has one of the highest boxing IQ’s in the sport, Shawn Porter will be ready to go to work against him.  I predicted Porter’s win against Alexander and I predict him to win again on Saturday.
